Stephanie Chase is the Executive Director of the Libraries of Eastern Oregon and Founding Principal of the Constructive Disruption consultancy. Previously, Stephanie was the Director of Libraries for Hillsboro (OR) and was the Director of Library Programs and Services for The Seattle Public Library. Stephanie is the founder of the Green Mountain (VT) Library Consortium, a statewide library consortium providing digital collections and partnership opportunities to 150 member libraries, a founding member and inaugural chair of the LibraryReads Steering Committee, and currently serves on the ¾«¶«´«Ã½Executive Board and the ¾«¶«´«Ã½Council.

Maura Deedy is the principal of Local Librarian Consulting, with over 17 years of experience in municipal and state government. Maura has worked with a variety of library organizations, from small and rural to large and urban, library networks, and library associations. Previously, she was the Library Advisory Specialist for the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, a state library agency, and held management roles at public libraries in Arlington (MA) and Weymouth (MA). Maura has served on the United for Libraries board since 2019, and also serves on ALA's Committee on Library Advocacy.

Libraries have become a flashpoint in the so-called "culture wars," facing an increasing backlash targeting everything from books and displays, programs and presenters, institutions, and even staff members themselves. Commentary has escalated to include misinformation, hate speech, and violent threats. Trustees can have a significant impact--positive or negative--in how their libraries weather these challenges, and how supported library staff feel throughout. Learn about the scope of the challenges libraries are facing, what it's like to be a front-line worker from one of the marginalized groups under fire, and how Trustees can work to proactively support their libraries, counter misinformation, and stand firm against the backlash.

Heath Umbreit is the Adult Services Librarian at Morrill Memorial Library in Norwood, MA. Heath uses they/them pronouns, and is trans/nonbinary and genderfluid. They earned their MLIS from Drexel University in 2014, and have presented before the Massachusetts Library Association, the New England Library Association, the Public Library Association, and the ¾«¶«´«Ã½'s Core webinar series. In their work, they intentionally center the values of equity, access, and social justice.

MacKenzie Ledley, M.L.S., is the Executive Director of the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac, IN. She is passionate about promoting intellectual freedom principles and advocating for libraries with public officials. Extending beyond her community, she has supported the profession by serving on the Merritt Fund Support Committee, IFRT By-laws & Organization Committee, and ¾«¶«´«Ã½Election Committee. She is the former co-chair of the Indiana Library Federation Advocacy Committee, where she worked tirelessly to promote the interests of libraries statewide. MacKenzie has presented on various intellectual freedom topics and advocacy topics for the Public Library Association, Freedom to Read Foundation, Indiana Library Federation, and most recently, the Association for Rural & Small Libraries.

Deborah A. Doyle

President, United for Libraries and Chair, Sonoma County Library Commission

Deborah Doyle, 2024-2026 President United For Libraries is a writer, editor, and fundraiser as well as an active library advocate at local, state, and national levels. Her work experience includes roles at the Defense Nuclear Agency, the Council on Economic Priorities, Dolby Laboratories, Heidrick & Struggles, Booz Allen.. She played board and staff roles at Friends of the San Francisco Public Library and was actively involved in helping to create San Francisco’s well-funded modern library system. She has served as President of the California Library Association (CLA) and is the only person to receive CLA’s President’s Award twice – the highest honor given to an individual for significant contributions to libraries. She currently sits on the United for Libraries board, the ¾«¶«´«Ã½Committee on Legislation, the CLA Advocacy and Legislative Committee, chairs the Sonoma County Library Commission, and is a past president of California Public Library Advocates. She also serves on United Intellectual Freedom/Advocacy Committee. Deborah holds a BA from University of Virginia (high honors) and an Executive MLIS from San Jose State University. She is also a performer and serves on the boards of the Living History Centre and the Guild of St. George in California.

Erika Thibault has over 17 years of experience working in libraries throughout California. Before starting as the Library Director for Sonoma County Library, I worked as a reference librarian, young adult librarian, and library assistant, in addition to my management experience as a branch manager and principal librarian for Los Angeles Public Library, and Deputy Director at Sonoma County Library. Before her library career, she worked for Santa Monica Public Radio, LA County Museum of Art, and University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

Join Johnson County Public Library (JCPL) Director Lisa Lintner to learn about the library's fundraising campaign, "Enhancing the Story," that raised over $300,000 for special projects at JCPL's newly constructed branch that opened in 2022. The campaign was designed to raise private donations to enhance intentionally designed spaces with state-of-the-art technology and features, as well as to construct an exterior space promoting art, health and nature. With the "Enhancing the Story Campaign," residents learned of six special project areas that needed additional fundraising to become a reality: public art, a Robotics Learning Lab, a teen gaming center, an early childhood learning area, an Adult Learning Center and a nature trail and community garden.

Lisa Lintner was appointed the director of the Johnson County Public Library in 2015. In her 20 years of public library experience, she has dedicated her career to providing outstanding services for patrons from the cradle through retirement. She graduated from Indiana University’s Master of Library Science program and holds a Bachelor of Science in English and Theatre from Ball State University. In 2016, the Johnson County Public Library Foundation was formed to support JCPL in providing lifelong literacy resources and programming. Lisa provides leadership, research and development for the Foundation as a board member and Library Director.

President & CEO Brenda Langstraat Bui joined the Chicago Public Library Foundation in 2019, her personal and professional values aligning with the Library’s commitment to “the freedom to read, to learn, to discover.” Brenda’s career is driven by the belief that creating empowered communities of learners will transform lives and support the advancement of Chicago’s neighborhoods. Brenda previously served as CEO of Working in the Schools (WITS), Chicago Public Schools’ largest literacy partner. Prior to WITS, Brenda was Executive Director of Parkways Foundation, the philanthropic partner to the Chicago Park District, where she led fundraising initiatives that invested private dollars into capital and programmatic projects. Co-Founder of Serving with a Purpose Conference in California

After 17 years of working in public libraries, Robin “retired” in April 2016.
She has organized 15 conferences and 20 workshops for Friends of the Library in the state of CA and she's the co-founder and organizer of the annual Serving with Purpose Conference. She was also a trainer for the California State Library -Get Involved workshops for 3 years.
She served as a United for Libraries board member for 12 years. She was chair of the 2017 UFL Annual Program Committee among other committee assignments and continue to assist the staff with marketing and social media. Robin has presented at over 13 ¾«¶«´«Ã½Annual and mid-winter Conferences. She also served as the Special Events Chair for the 2017 California Library Association Conference.

She is a past President of California Public Library Advocates, and is a current 13-year board member, publicity chair and author chair of the Friends of the Corona Public Library. She has consulted with five libraries and was a Grants Manager/Project Coordinator with the California Library Association. She recently completed a 21-month consulting contract with the Ontario City Library which included revitalizing a new Friends of the Library and book store operations team.

Bill Kelly

Adult Programming Manager, Cuyahoga County Public Library

Bill Kelly is the Adult Programming Manager for Cuyahoga County Public Library. Bill has served as Chair of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½’s Notable Books Council, as Chair for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, a judge for The Story Prize, and the Axinn Foundation Prize for Creative Nonfiction. Bill is the co-founder of both Cleveland Book Week and One Community Reads. He is longtime reviewer for Booklist and former columnist of Bill’s Bookshelf. Bill is the 2013 recipient of the Allie Beth Martin Award, given to a librarian who has demonstrated extraordinary range and depth of knowledge about books and distinguished ability to share that knowledge.
