CHICAGO – Newly published research from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) peer-reviewed online journal, School Library Research (SLR) presents a study undertaken by AASL’s Community of Scholars to pilot an annual aggregation and systematic review of research related to school librarian practice. In the recently published “School Libr*: A Review of Published Research Articles from 2019,” Sue Kimmel, Jennifer Moore, Rebecca Morris, Audrey Church, and Ann Dutton Ewbank present a review of research related to school librarian practice. The AASL Strategic Plan (2019) also included five core values: learning; innovation; equity, diversity, and inclusion; intellectual freedom; and collaboration. This review also explores how published research in 2019 reflects the core values.

The research team used a scoping literature review and the search string “school libr*” were employed to provide a broad sweep of potential studies. The researchers found the “core values to be tightly intertwined in the research. Learning outcomes were a focus in nearly 50% of the studies, but learning was a component of much of the remaining research in innovation and collaboration.”

The study offers researchers tools such as informing research or potential collaborators, identifying gaps in existing research, as well as potential international and interdisciplinary to disseminate research related to school librarianship. The researchers also note the low number of studies related to EDI and intellectual freedom offer areas for future inquiry.
