¾«¶«´«Ã½

CHICAGO – Becky Calzada, Library Services Coordinator in the Leander Independent School District (ISD) based in Leander, Texas, has been elected the 2023-2024 president-elect of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). She will serve as the AASL President during the 2024-2025 term.

Upon learning the outcome of the election, Calzada provided the following statement:

“Thank you to all who participated in the 2023 AASL election. To be elected to the position of AASL President-elect is one which I don't take lightly. I am excited and ready to serve the entire AASL community by listening, advocating and telling the story of all that is occurring in our vibrant, learner-centered school libraries. Behind those outstanding school libraries are school librarians working strategically, tirelessly, and passionately on behalf of their school communities. Each and every day, school librarians embody and live out the AASL Standards via the work they plan and lead with all learners within their schools. I want to share all the incredible happenings in our spaces and advocate for any challenges school librarians face today, especially on the intellectual freedom frontlines. I am appreciative of your vote of confidence in me and am excited to get to work with the AASL Board, AASL Staff and AASL Chapters, and Sections.”

Calzada previously served on the AASL Board of Directors from 2016-2022 and has written for AASL’s Knowledge Quest. Calzada is currently a member of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½Policy Corp and has served on the ¾«¶«´«Ã½Intellectual Freedom Committee. A past-chair of the Texas Association of School Librarians (TASL), she currently serves on the Texas Library Association Legislative Committee. Calzada is also a co-founding member of #FReadom Fighters, a grassroots effort led by four Texas librarians to fight censorship, provide a supportive space for librarians, and offer resources for anyone wanting to advocate for intellectual freedom.
