CHICAGO—Join Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures for a four-week virtual workshop that focuses on navigating the many features libraries can employ to serve patrons of all ages with both physical and intellectual disabilities. Participants will discover the basic how-tos of beginning or expanding services to patrons with disabilities as well as get a glimpse at community collaboration, grant writing, needs assessments, Universal Design, emerging technology and practical applications of services, such as programs, outreach and virtual services, to meet the needs of this underserved population. Open to library staff at all levels of library service and administration in public, academic and school library settings, this session workshop will explore ableism, library technology and universal design, budgets and grants, and practical applications. At the end of this Core Classroom, participants will be able to identify and combat internalized and systemic ableism; have practical knowledge and tools, including identifying grants and community resources to plan for sustainability; and build awareness of physical/tangible and technology/virtual accessibility.

Format

Students have 24/7 access to the class site for the duration of the class, and aside from assignment deadlines, the work can be completed at their convenience.

Requirements

A computer with Internet access is required. A high-speed connection and headphones are recommended. No experience is necessary; beginners from any background are welcome.
