Cases of workplace violence involving armed perpetrators at libraries are both rare and catastrophic. Not all subjects have used guns in these attacks; edged weapons are a concern as well. Recent attacks in Sacramento, CA; Framingham, MA; and Clovis, NM have heightened the awareness of the need for library employees to follow the national Department of Homeland Security (DHS) protocol: Run - Hide - Fight. Since all employees are in charge of their own sense of security, they need to know what to do, what not to do, and how to protect themselves and others during these life-changing events.

Dr. Albrecht uses empowerment over fear to make you feel comfortable about an uncomfortable subject like this one (e.g. no explicit videos or frightening stories). In this fast-paced and tool-based session, he covers these issues:

• Defining potential workplace events and possible perpetrators
• A brief history of active shooter events nationally and at libraries, and lessons learned
• Recognizing pre-attack behavioral warning signs
• When to use “high-risk customer service skills"
• The value of staff viewing either the DHS Run - Hide - Fight six-minute video or the California State University Run-Hide-Fight video
• Related responses and drills and understanding police response
• How to practice and drill with Run-Hide safely and effectively

About the Instructor

Dr. Steve Albrecht, PHR, CPP, BCC, is board certified in HR, security management, and employee coaching. In 1994, he co-wrote Ticking Bombs, one of the first business books on workplace violence. He holds a doctorate in Business Administration, an M.A. in Security Management, a B.S. in Psychology, and a B.A. in English. He worked for the San Diego Police Department from 1984 to 1999 and is the author of 15 books on business, workplace security, and criminal justice topics, including (¾«¶«´«Ã½Editions, 2015).
