CHICAGO—¾«¶«´«Ã½Publishing eLearning Solutions announces an exciting new workshop in collaboration with the Music Library Association, with Mary Huismann and Linda Blair. This workshop will last 90 minutes and take place at 2:30pm Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30am Pacific on Wednesday, October 31, 2018.

Cataloging music is a unique and sometimes tricky process, even for experienced catalogers. At both the conceptual level and the microscopic level, musical materials are different from other library resources, and if you’re new to cataloging these materials, it can be tough to get started.

In this new workshop, cataloging experts and Music Library Association Cataloging and Metadata Committee members Mary Huismann and Linda Blair will provide you with a foundation in music cataloging. They will teach you basic musical concepts and demonstrate how to solve more complex problems, including music-specific encoding and subject access issues. You’ll learn the essentials of music cataloging and be provided with additional resources you can use to further expand your knowledge.

About the Instructors

Mary Huismann is the Music Catalog Librarian at St. Olaf College. She formerly served as Music/Media Original Cataloger at the University of Minnesota. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music History and Theory from the University of Wisconsin—Whitewater, a Master of Music in History and Literature and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. Mary is currently chair of the Music Library Association Content Standards Subcommittee and the NACO-Music Project Advisory Committee. She also serves as the MLA liaison to the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA). Mary has presented several workshops on RDA cataloging for music and video.

Linda Blair is Head of Cataloging at the Sibley Library of the Eastman School of Music, where she has worked in a variety of cataloging positions since 1989. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education (Flute) from Lebanon Valley College, a Master of Science Degree in Education from Cornell University and a Master of Library Science Degree from Southern Connecticut State University. For the Music Library Association, she has served on the Authorities Subcommittee of the former Bibliographic Control Committee and on the Education Committee as Pre-Conference Workshop Coordinator. She is a participant in the NACO Music Project and currently serves as Coordinator of the PCC BIBCO Music Funnel, serving also on the MLA Cataloging and Metadata Committee (CMC) and its Content Standards Subcommittee (ex-officio).
