CHICAGO—¾«¶«´«Ã½Publishing eLearning Solutions announces an exciting new workshop in collaboration with the Music Library Association, with Casey Mullin and Hermine Vermeij. This workshop will last 90 minutes and take place at 2:30pm Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30am Pacific on Wednesday, August 29, 2018.

This 90-minute workshop introduces catalogers to three new Library of Congress vocabularies as they apply to music resources—the Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT), the Library of Congress Genre/Form Thesaurus (LCGFT), and the Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms (LCDGT). These innovative tools enable faceted access to music materials via library discovery environments. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to search and navigate these vocabularies, apply MLA best practices for assigning terms in current cataloging, and how to code the terms in MARC21.

Catalogers of all levels of experience with the vocabularies will benefit from this comprehensive overview.

About the Instructors

Casey Mullin is Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services at Western Washington University. He formerly served as Music Cataloger at the New York Public Library and as Head of Data Control for the Stanford University Libraries. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from Western Washington University and a Master of Library Science from Indiana University Bloomington. He recently concluded a term as chair of the MLA Vocabularies Subcommittee (formerly the Subject Access Subcommittee), was a member of the MLA Genre/Form Task Force and Authorities Subcommittee, and chaired the RDA Music Implementation Task Force. Outside of MLA, Mullin served on the ALCTS Subject Analysis Committee's Subcommittee on Genre Form Implementation and currently serves on its successor group, the Subcommittee on Faceted Vocabularies. Accordingly, he has been involved with various aspects of Library of Congress faceted vocabulary development for the past nine years. Casey has given numerous presentations about these endeavors and recently began a three-year term on the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's Policy Committee.

Hermine Vermeij is a librarian in the UCLA Cataloging & Metadata Center, where she serves as the Team Leader of the Subject Specialists and the Music Cataloger. She catalogs scores, sound recordings, and other materials for the Music Library, as well as monographs in German, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, and Tagalog. Vermeij recently concluded a term on the board of the Music Library Association (MLA) as the Fiscal Officer, and currently chairs MLA’s Linked Data Working Group. She has been active in vocabulary projects within MLA and the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ (ALA), and has given numerous presentations on genre/form and medium of performance terms for music. She holds an MLIS from UCLA and a BA in Music from UC Santa Cruz. Hermine lives in Tarzana, California, with her husband, two sons, and a cat.
