CHICAGO—¾«¶«´«Ã½Publishing eLearning Solutions announces an exciting new workshop, with Jill Hurst-Wahl. This workshop will consist of two 90-minute sessions and take place at 2:30pm Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30am Pacific on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018 and Wednesday, March 7, 2018.

As a librarian, you are a defender of copyright and of proper and ethical access to information. In this two-part workshop, you’ll learn all about copyright, so you can help discern how your library and community can use print and digital materials within the confines of copyright law.

In the first 90-minute session, learn the basic rules of copyright law in ordinary terms and how to put its usage into context. At the end of the first session, you will be able to explain the basics of copyright law, including:

• What is protected by federal copyright law
• The length of copyright protection
• What rights a creator or copyright owner has
• What is Fair Use
• What is in the public domain

The session includes time for Q&A and an opportunity to submit questions that will be addressed during the second session.

In part two, we’ll build upon part one and tackle two important areas crucial to libraries: Fair Use and e-books. Did you know there’s an actual test to determine if the use is fair? You’ll learn about that test and how e-books and other digital materials intersect with U.S. copyright law. Given that digital works are generally licensed and not sold, we’ll also look at how we can advocate on behalf of our libraries and community members.

At the end of the session, you will be able to:

• Assist your users and other staff members in understanding the real meaning of Fair Use
• Understand where e-books intersect with copyright law and why advocacy is needed

About the Instructor

Jill Hurst-Wahl is a consultant, speaker, writer, and educator. She is an associate professor of practice in Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies and the president of Hurst Associates, Ltd. A former corporate librarian, Jill has always been an advocate for increasing the impact of libraries, no matter the type of community or organization they serve. She is a member of the USNY Technology Policy and Practices Council and the Onondaga County Public Library Board of Trustees. Her interests include copyright, the use of social media, and the future of the profession.
