Mobile makerspaces allow you to provide useful and engaging making opportunities for your students and patrons and allow you to reach your users where they are. Creating one can be a challenge—you may need to find additional outreach opportunities for your community or figure out how to scale down a full-size makerspace.

In this workshop, makerspace researcher Heather Moorefield-Lang teaches you everything you need to know about mobile makerspaces—from the different types, styles, and examples of mobile makerspaces to the activities that you can employ with them. Heather covers a variety of ways that making can be taken on the road with all types of libraries—school, public, and academic. You’ll leave the workshop with a clear vision for how you can take your making mobile.

After participating in this workshop, you will

• Understand what makes a makerspace mobile
• Know different types, styles, and examples of mobile makerspaces that you can implement and a variety of ways that making can be taken on the road with all types of libraries
• Walk away with activities, lessons, and goals that you can use in your mobile makerspace
• Have a firm understanding of mobile making and how your library can go mobile

About the Instructor

Heather Moorefield-Lang is a former middle school theater teacher and school librarian. She currently serves as an associate professor with the University of South Carolina in the School of Library and Information Science. Heather has long been interested in how technologies can further enhance instruction in libraries and classrooms. Her current research focuses on makerspaces in libraries of all types and levels. She has had the honor of being nominated for the White House Champion of Change for Making in 2016 and was a finalist for 2017’s American Association of School Librarians Social Media Superstars in the area of Tech Troubadours.
