CHICAGO – Building a learner’s science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) skills will be the focus of an upcoming webinar from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). Taking place on Tues., Sept. 12, at 6:00 p.m. Central, “Beyond Book Readings: Building Science Literacy with Hands-On Activities” will highlight best practices for engaging diverse learners in science education through narrative nonfiction books and outdoor/hands-on activities.

During the webinar, Jennifer Fee, manager of the BirdSleuth K-12 program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, will introduce librarians to freely available lessons as well as multimedia resources related to birds and nature that are specifically designed to help build learners’ STEAM skills and content knowledge. Fee will share resources such as Cornell Lab’s Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds to K-8 book guides and free lesson plans, to free apps and online interactives.

Fee, as part of the BirdSleuth team, offers resources and training opportunities focused on building student science skills through outdoor investigations and citizen-science projects. Fee holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology, and has spent the last twenty years in the field of K-12 science education focused on curriculum development and educator training.
