Celebrate Outreach at ¾«¶«´«Ã½Annual Conference

¾«¶«´«Ã½

CHICAGO – Every day, libraries across the country deliver vital library services across the communities they serve. To showcase the work outreach library professionals do on a daily basis, the ¾«¶«´«Ã½Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services and the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services is presenting Bookmobile and Outreach Saturday, a series of programs and events during ALA’s Annual Conference in Chicago that showcases the wide range of services and programs that libraries provide beyond their walls. Outreach Saturday will be held on Saturday, June 24th.

Outreach Saturday will kick off with “Outreach Outside the Box,” from 8:30-10:00am in room W183b in McCormick Place. During this session, a panel of outreach specialists from several libraries will discuss their outreach strategies, with a special emphasis on services for older adults with Alzheimer’s disease. Attendees will learn about the efforts being made by several libraries to present programming, collection development, and outreach services to this growing population. Resources for library staff serving patrons with dementia will also be discussed.

From 10:30-11:30, also in room W183b, “Services for the Incarcerated: From the local jail to the big city prison” will feature a panel of librarians who will explore a variety of services and programming geared towards the needs of incarcerated people and ex-offenders and their families, in communities ranging in size from small county libraries in rural areas to New York City.

In the afternoon from 12:00-3:00pm at the Gate 41 entrance in McCormick Place West (outside room W176), climb aboard several bookmobiles from the Chicago area and speak with bookmobile staffers during the Parade of Bookmobiles. Attendees will have the opportunity to enter a random drawing to win a gift certificate from ¾«¶«´«Ã½Graphics.

The day’s activities will then move to the exhibit floor Special Events area from 3:00-5:00pm for the 2017 Diversity & Outreach Fair, featuring 30 presentations from libraries, students, and organizations highlighting innovative and successful diversity in action ideas. The theme for this year’s Fair is "Inclusive Outreach: Providing Services to the Underserved and Marginalized." The 2017 ¾«¶«´«Ã½Diversity & Outreach Fair is made possible thanks to generous support from DEMCO.

All Outreach Saturday programs are free and open to attendees of ¾«¶«´«Ã½Annual Conference. For more information, please visit .

About the Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services

The ¾«¶«´«Ã½Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services supports library and information science workers in creating safe, responsible, and all-inclusive spaces that serve and represent the entire community. To accomplish this, we decenter power and privilege by facilitating conversations around access and identity as they impact the profession and those we serve. We use a social justice framework to inform library and information science workers' development of resources. We strive to create an association culture where these concerns are incorporated into everybody's everyday work.

NOTE: ROOM LOCATION FOR OUTREACH OUTSIDE THE BOX AND SERVICES FOR THE INCARCERATED HAS CHANGED TO W183b
