The travel grants will be awarded annually to five black/African American youth/teen services public or school librarians for the purpose of attending the ��ýAnnual conference. The grants provide up to $3000 (and not less than $1500) to cover actual expenses for five black/African American librarians selected by ��ýfor travel, housing, registration, and cost of ticket to the Coretta Scott King (CSK) Awards Breakfast.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration a book must: NOTE: There is no limitation as to format. A book may be in hard or paper covers, spiral bound, in portfolio, etc. It is expected that books will have a collective unity of story-line, theme, or concept developed through text or pictures or a combination thereof.

Criteria

Notable is defined as: Worthy of note or notice, important, distinguished, outstanding. As applied to children's books, notable should be thought to include books of especially commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry and pictures for all age levels (through age 14) that reflect and encourage children's interests in exemplary ways.The evaluative criteria to be used are: 1. literary quality; 2. originality of text and illustration; 3. clarity and style of language; 4. excellence of illustration; 5. excellence of design and format; 6. subject matter of interest and value to children; 7. the likelihood of acceptance by children.BOARD ACTIONS: "The ��ýNotable Children's Books List, compiled by the ALSC Book Evaluation Committee, shall include the annual selections of the Newbery and Caldecott Award and Honor Books." - (July 1976)"The ��ýNotable Children's Books List, compiled by the ALSC Notable Children's Books Committee, shall include the books selected annually by the Batchelder Award Committee." - (July 1981)."Beginning with 2004, include the Sibert medal and honor books, and the Belpré medal and honor books with a copyright date of the previous year, on the annual Notable Children's Books List" - (November 2003)."Include the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award winner and honor books automatically on the list of books created by the Notable Children's Books Committee, starting with the first award in 2006." - (January 2006)

About

The Alex Awards were first given annually beginning in 1998. The titles were selected by the YALSA Adult Books for Young Adults Task Force from the previous year's publishing and were part of the Adult Books for Young Adults Project, which explored the role of adult books in the reading lives of teenagers and was funded by the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust. Edwards was a young adult specialist for many years at the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore. Her work is described in her book Fair Garden and the Swarm of Beasts, and over the years she has served as an inspiration to librarians who serve young adults. With the approval of the Trust, the task force appointed to develop and implement the project named the awards the Alex Awards after Edwards, who was called “Alex” by her friends.

The task force decided to select ten titles annually, and also decided to select a top ten list rather than a single title or a long list because of the popularity of the concept and because it parallels the Top Ten titles selected by the Best Books for Young Adults and Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers committees. The task force members also believed that selecting more than one book provided a greater variety of titles, whereas a longer list would be less selective than desired. A top ten list also allows for a more balanced list—fiction and nonfiction, as well as various genres. The task force also wanted to make diversity a priority in the lists.

In 2002 the Alex Awards were approved as an official ��ýaward, and the Task Force was superseded by the Alex Awards Committee.

The major sponsor of the Alex Awards continues to be the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust. Booklist is also a sponsor.

The list of winning titles is annotated, stressing the appeal elements of the title, and includes listen-alikes to lead listeners to additional audio experiences.

Notification

The Council announces the winning titles at the CODES Book and Media Awards Reception, held the Sunday of each ��ýMidwitner Meeting. All selected titles are published on the RUSA Web site following the event.

Criteria

A book may be selected for The Reading List for at least one, and preferably more than one of the following reasons:
In the context of the list, genre literature is defined as works clearly intended to be read by the general public as genre literature. Each book is considered in relation to both the general adult reader and to the avid fans of the genre.
Books will not be excluded on the basis of their unsuitability for younger readers.
Books intended for a younger audience but which hold wide appeal for adults and meet the selection criteria may also be considered.

The Reading List Council compiles a monthly list of titles to consider. This list is e-mailed to the respective publishers along with a letter of instruction. Timely response to these requests is deeply appreciated by the Council.
Publishers are welcome to send additional books as they see fit if they believe they meet the criteria for consideration. Publishers should be aware that the Council reads hundreds of books each year, and while individual members do indeed read and make formal requests for non-solicited books to be added to the consideration list, this is not a typical occurrence.
Publishers who wish to send non-requested books have two options:
Authors should speak to their publishers if they wish their book to be sent to the members of the Council.

Notification

The Council announces the eight winning titles at the CODES Awards Reception. A short list of honor titles (up to four per genre) is also announced. All selected titles are published on the RUSA Web site following the event: https://www.rusaupdate.org/awards/the-reading-list/.
