CHICAGO — Share innovative strategies and resources with your peers by submitting an education program proposal for the 2025 LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience, taking place January 24-27, 2025, in Phoenix, Arizona. The submission site is open now through August 12.

LibLearnX programming focuses on active and applied learning across four formats: Accelerator, Ideas Xchange, Learning Lab, and ShopTalk. The programmatic theme of LibLearnX 2025 is Reimagine, Refocus, Reset: Charting a Path for the Future. With your contributions, we look forward to a diverse and compelling LibLearnX program that will help shape the future of libraries and their communities.

The LibLearnX Program Submission Guide provides detailed explanations of the learning formats and step-by-step instructions for submitting a proposal. Consult the Program Proposal Rubric for evaluation criteria and scoring and view a video on using the submission site to create and submit your proposal.

The proposal submission site will close on Monday, August 12 at 11:59 PM Eastern. You must create a user account for the site to initiate a proposal. ��ýis unable to accept late proposals.

CHICAGO - After careful evaluation and analysis of financial and other critical factors, the ��ý Executive Board has decided that LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience will not be held in 2026.

As ��ýlooks ahead, efforts are underway to determine how best to present some of the most beloved celebratory events traditionally held at the January conference: the I Love My Librarian Awards; the RUSA Book & Media Awards, which features the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction; the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sunrise Celebration; and the Youth Media Awards.

In the process of transitioning, the ��ý will consult with the respective committees, round tables, and member leaders. Their valuable insights and perspectives will be integral in shaping the direction of these events. This collaborative approach underscores ALA's commitment to inclusivity and responsiveness to the diverse voices within its membership and esteem for the history and impact of this work. The board is actively thinking about the experiences and value ��ýprovides to its members.

Stay tuned for further updates as the board works to redefine and elevate members’ shared experiences for years to come.

The Executive Board affirmed that LibLearnX will be held Jan. 24-27, 2025, in Phoenix as planned. Watch for more details and mark your calendars for next January.

'The Berry Pickers,' 'We Were Once a Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America' receive 2024 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction

BALTIMORE — The ��ý (ALA) selects “The Berry Pickers,” by Amanda Peters, published by Catapult, as the winner of the 2024 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and "We Were Once a Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America," by Roxanna Asgarian, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, as the winner of the 2024 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. The selections were announced at the Reference and User Services Association's Book and Media Awards (BMAs) event, sponsored by NoveList, on Saturday, January 20th, during LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience in Baltimore, MD.

The Carnegie awards, established in 2012, serve as a guide to help adults select quality reading material. They are the first single-book awards for adult books given by the ��ýand reflect the expert judgment and insight of library professionals and booksellers who work closely with adult readers.

In “The Berry Pickers,” an Indigenous Mi’kmaq family is in Maine in 1962 to pick summer blueberries when their youngest child, four-year-old Ruthie, disappears. Her six-year-old brother, Joe, saw her last. Told in alternating, first-person chapters from Joe and a narrator called Norma, this fascinating, braided novel follows the painful reverberations of Ruthie’s disappearance across five decades. While little is easy for Amanda Peters’ characters, in the end, for all of them, there is hope.

"We Were Once a Family” looks into a 2018 tragedy in which two women deliberately drove themselves and their six children off a cliff into the Pacific Ocean. While there was considerable speculation about the parents, who were married and white, the media paid little attention to the six Black children, who had been adopted from two different families. Investigative reporter Roxanna Asgarian’s years of work getting to know the children’s birth families uncovered a devastating web of intergenerational poverty, violence, and wrenching separations. She exposes the calamities that occurred and the ongoing, insupportable failings of the foster system.

"The committee is so excited for the Medalists to see their outstanding creations celebrated on such a big stage," said Aryssa Damron, chair of the selection committee for the 2024 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence. "Amanda Peters' stunning prose and evocative narrative enraptured us with the grief and longing of her characters. Roxanna Asgarian's blending of journalism, narrative nonfiction, and heartbreak tears back the veil on the child removal systems in the United States. Endless thanks to my amazing committee for spending a year reading great literature, discussing deeply with each other, and selecting two outstanding books that complement each other so perfectly and represent a year of inspiring conversations."

The 2024 fiction finalists include “The Berry Pickers,” by Amanda Peters, published by Catapult; “Denison Avenue,” by Christina Wong and Daniel Innes, published by ECW Press; and “Let Us Descend,” by Jesmyn Ward, published by Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, Inc.

2024 nonfiction finalists include “The Great Displacement: Climate Change and the Next American Migration,” by Jake Bittle, published by Simon & Schuster; “The Talk,” by Darrin Bell, published by Henry Holt and Company; and “We Were Once a Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America,” by Roxanna Asgarian, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Carnegie Medal winners will each receive $5,000. All the finalists will be honored and the winners will be presented with their medals during a celebratory event at the San Diego Public Library during ALA's 2024 Annual Conference in June.

The Medals are made possible, in part, by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York in recognition of Andrew Carnegie’s deep belief in the power of books and learning to change the world, and are co-sponsored by ALA’s Booklist and the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA).

LLX Close Out Panel Session, Navigating Leadership: Perspectives on Purpose-Driven Careers at 2024 LibLearnX

CHICAGO — The ��ý (ALA) announced the LLX Close Out Session, featuring a panel of senior library leaders who will discuss Navigating Leadership: Perspectives on Purpose-Driven Careers at the 2024 LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience (LLX) in Baltimore, January 19–22, 2024.

The informative and thoughtful panel session will focus on self-care, nourishing goals, and tips for building connections to support leadership along the way. The panelists include: Cindy Hohl, ��ýPresident Elect; Sonia Alcántara-Antoine, CEO, Baltimore County Public Library; and Tamika Barnes, Associate Dean, Perimeter Library Services at Georgia State University Library.

Leadership pathways are not necessarily linear, nor do they look the same for all. Where do you begin, and how do you turn your experience, interests, and passions into a personal narrative that highlights your strengths? Making space for networking and developing as a professional doesn’t have to be one more thing to do on an overwhelming checklist.

LibLearnX registration is open and registrants can save with advance rates through January 15.

LibLearnX is a four-day learning conference that invites ��ýmembers and non-members to participate in collaborative and engaging education, networking, and celebrations. Designed as an active-learning experience, LibLearnX offers a diverse selection of more than 100 education programs, created by library professionals for library professionals. The sessions will be available in eight primary content areas: Books and Authors, Collection Services, Community Outreach and Engagement, Health and Wellness, Leadership and Management, Library Programs and Services, Readers' Advisory, and Technology Innovation.

From hands-on workshops to bite-sized presentations, participants will be able to collaborate and engage in education programs offered in four available learning formats. View the LibLearnX Program to find the daily schedule, education programs, with more to be added.

The LibLearnX main stage will host featured speakers and ��ýLeadership who will discuss topics that are important to library professionals and the future of libraries.

The LLX Marketplace will host 100 exhibitors offering the newest titles, leading technologies, and core services for libraries. Creative and collaborative activation zones will include Ideas Xchange sessions where attendees will share creative projects and enjoy peer-to-peer conversations. ShopTalk sessions will offer practical knowledge, tips, hot topics, and trends in bite-sized presentations. On the LLX Studio stage, author speakers will inspire and motivate attendees.

LibLearnX attendees can expand their networks in collaborative education programs and varied social activities, including the I Love My Librarian Awards, the ��ýYouth Media Awards, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunrise Celebration, and more. The Book and Media Awards and Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction will be streamed virtually.

LibLearnX will once again host participants at the ��ýGovernance Institute (AGI). The Institute offers the leadership and professional development skills needed for impactful leadership and effective decision making. It will take place Friday, January 19, 2024, from 1:00 p.m.– 5:00 p.m., and is open to the first 200 LibLearnX registrants that sign up. There is no separate registration for the AGI session, sign up is completed at LibLearnX registration. ― This session is now at capacity.

��ýGives Back is an initiative that will allow attendees to volunteer and make a difference in two local community events and demonstrate the difference that library professionals can make. ― Both community events are now at capacity.

The LLX Digital Experience is a virtual-presentation model that offers access to a curated selection of sessions, including the Opening and Closing sessions, author speakers on the LLX Studio stage, education sessions, the ��ýYouth Media Awards, and the Book and Media Awards/Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction. Registrants will have access to on-demand content through March 22, 2024.

CHICAGO – Author and Tech Bootcamp Founder David Delmar Sentíes will deliver the keynote address at the 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Observance and Sunrise Celebration during the ��ý’s Library Learning Experience (LLX) in Baltimore. The 2024 Celebration will be held from 6:30-8:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 21 in the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor, Key Ballroom 7-12.

David Delmar Sentíes is the author of "What We Build with Power: The Fight for Economic Justice in Tech" (Beacon Press, 2023). He is the Founder and former Executive Director of Resilient Coders, a highly competitive, free, and stipended nonprofit coding bootcamp that trains people of color from low-income backgrounds for high-growth careers as software engineers. Resilient Coders was recognized by the White House in 2016, and has been featured in TechCrunch, Fast Company News, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, BostInno, Bay State Banner, NPR, NECN, Xconomy, VentureFizz, Hot 96.9, and other news outlets. She is a retired supervisor, library services, nonpublic Schools, for the Los Angeles Unified School District with over 34 years of experience as a teacher, librarian, and administrator in elementary and secondary education. She was the owner of a children's bookstore for over 20 years. She was adjunct professor at California State University, Long Beach where she taught graduate courses in children’s literature and young adult literature with a focus on multicultural literature.

McLinn is committed to EDI (equity, diversity, and inclusion), a commitment that has been at the core of her life’s work. As an active member in the ��ý (ALA) for over 25 years, she has chaired and served on many ��ýcommittees, task forces, and book award juries, including the Newbery, Coretta Scott King, Pura Belpré, and Caldecott Awards.

While chair of the Coretta Scott King (CSK) Book Award Committee, McLinn also served as chair of the CSK 50th Anniversary Celebration. Dr. McLinn is the recipient of the 2015 BC��ýAppreciation Award, 2020 Distinguished Service Award from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the 2023 Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Ashley Mitchell Named a 2024 Core Emerging Leader

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures is pleased to announce that Ashley Mitchell has been selected as a Core Emerging Leader (EL). Mitchell serves as Adult Services Librarian at Camden County Library System in Voorhees, NJ. She has over 20 years of library experience in various departments. She recently chaired the New Jersey Library Association’s Equity & Mentorship Task Force, completed their Emerging Leaders program, and led her library’s Diversity & Inclusion Team. She has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Morgan State University and an MLIS from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Mitchell says, “I am grateful to have sponsorship from Core because this division supports leadership and management, which aligns with my career aspirations of library leadership. I want to become a leader to evoke much-needed changes in the Library and Information Science field. Alison Van Norman Named a 2024 Core Emerging Leader

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures is pleased to announce that Alison Van Norman has been selected as a Core Emerging Leader (EL). Van Norman serves as the Outreach and Marketing Librarian for Elon University, where she plans and markets library events and programs and acts as liaison to the Art, Music, and Performing Arts departments. She enjoys creating low-stress environments for students, helping them familiarize themselves with library spaces and staff, and then seeing them return to study and engage in programs. She received her MLIS from UNC-Greensboro.

Van Norman says, “I am now seeking out next steps in my career path, strengthening my leadership skills, and learning specifically what successful leadership looks like in libraries. This is what brought me to apply for the Emerging Leaders program. The networking opportunities, and specifically the group project, is an ideal setting to not only practice new leadership skills, but also to build comfort and confidence in being in a leadership role, with the program providing a structured environment for practice.”

Adult fiction and children’s book author Kate DiCamillo to present at 2024 LibLearnX

CHICAGO — The ��ý (ALA) today announced that adult fiction and children’s book author Kate DiCamillo will present at the 2024 LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience (LLX) in Baltimore, January 19–22, 2024.

One of America’s most beloved storytellers, DiCamillo will discuss her new book, “Ferris,” at LibLearnX. The playful book explores how the character Ferris Wilkey navigated chaos and unexpected challenges during one pivotal summer. Through humor and a touch of the supernatural, DiCamillo’s story conveys a message of adaptability, familial bonds, and the ability to find light in unexpected places—even amidst the pandemonium of life's twists and turns.

DiCamillo has written many novels over the course of her illustrious career, four of which have been adapted to film: “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “Tiger Rising,” “The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread,” and “Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures.” She has published picture books and several successful series of chapter books, including “Mercy Watson to the Rescue” and “Tales from Deckawoo Lane.” In 2022, “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” was adapted into an opera and performed by the Minnesota Opera.

Among a host of awards and honors, DiCamillo has received two Newbery Medal Awards, the Geisel Award, the Parent’s Choice Award, and has been honored multiple times by the National Book Foundation. She was named the 2014-2015 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature by the Library of Congress.

Carrie McClain Named a 2024 Core Emerging Leader

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures is pleased to announce that Carrie McClain has been selected as a Core Emerging Leader (EL). McClain serves as the Chief Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Tulsa City-County Library, where she works cross-departmentally to envision and implement their equity, diversity and inclusion strategy. She is a member of their executive leadership team and enjoys running staff workshops. She possesses a Masters in Human Relations, has worked in ED&I roles since 2016, and joined the library field in 2022.

McClain says, “As a newcomer to library spaces, I’ve wanted to become more immersed in my learning journey. I am hoping that this experience will fill in the gap of what I feel I’ve needed to become more knowledgeable about the profession. I believe that this experience can positively increase my impact in the work that I do day-to-day.”

One of 50 library workers chosen from across the U.S. and Canada, McClain will participate in project planning work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into the ��ýstructure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. Following a virtual, day-long kickoff session during the ��ýLibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience (LibLearnX), the program will continue in an online learning and networking environment for six months, culminating in a presentation of the groups' work at the 2024 ��ýAnnual Conference in San Diego, CA this June.
