Library leaders with responsibility for one or more buildings continually grapple with aging systems and facilities, while also keeping physical spaces fresh and responsive to evolving service and programming needs. Without a comprehensive plan, a series of small improvements in individual rooms or partial floors can lead to an inconsistent patron and staff experience and inefficient resource use. Additionally, without a master plan, collection management policies intended to free up library space, can make library real estate targets for both desirable and less desirable non-library uses. Administrative support and campus funding requests are better received when presented within the context of a master plan that aligns with campus-wide strategic goals. This series explores the key aspects of a Library Facility Master Plan, from understanding its necessity and initiation to practical insights about conducting a master planning process, along with lessons learned. It features presenters including planners and architects, as well as a wide spectrum of academic library deans, whose experiences will provide useful insights.

Library Facility Master Planning
September 25 - October 16, 2024

The series consists of the following four live webinar presentations:

What is a Library Facility Master Plan and Why is it Needed?
Wednesday, September 25, 2024, 1 - 2:15 p.m. CT
Presenters:
Gili Meerovitch, Principal, Perkins Eastman|Pfeiffer, Los Angeles, CA
Patrick Deaton, Associate Director for Learning Spaces and Capital Management, NC State Libraries, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC
Jennifer Nutefall, Dean of Libraries and Museums, Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO
Cheryl Gowing, Associate Dean, Library Facilities, Strategic Planning & Organizational Development, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL

Having a Seat at the Table: Representation and Participation in the Library Facility Master Planning Process
Tuesday, October 1, 2024, 1 - 2:15 p.m. CT
Presenters:
Gili Meerovitch, Principal, Perkins Eastman|Pfeiffer, Los Angeles, CA
Carlos Rodriguez, Dean, University Library, California State University-Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA
Kelly Hayes McAlonie, Director of Campus Planning, University of Buffalo, Amherst, NY
Donald Gilstrap, Dean, UA Libraries, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL

Library Master Planning - Lessons Learned
Wednesday, October 9, 2024, 1 - 2:15 p.m. CT
Presenters:
Carlos Rodriguez, Dean, University Library, California State University-Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA
Jeff Steely, Dean of Libraries, Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA
Niraj Choudhary, Dean, Library and Learning Center, University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA
Jeff Belliston, Senior Associate University Librarian, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT

Inheriting a Library Facility Master Plan by Others
Wednesday, October 16, 2024, 1 - 2:15 p.m. CT
Presenters:
Claire Stewart, University Librarian and Dean of Libraries, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, IL
Jason Battles, Dean of University Libraries, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR
Joseph (Joe) Salem, Rita DiGiallonardo Holloway University Librarian and Vice Provost for Library Affairs, Duke University, Durham, NC
Sharon Murphy, Principal, Perkins Eastman|Pfeiffer, Los Angeles, CA

Register for the full four-part series on its registration page.

Four-Part Series Registration Fees:

$174.47 - Core Member
$215.10 - 精东传媒member
$239.00 - Non-member

Individual Webinar Registration Fees:

Core Member: $57.67
精东传媒Member: $71.10
Nonmember: $79.00

How Do I Purchase Group Registration?

You can register a group by specifying the number of people who will be accessing the webinar during checkout. The presenter will provide a case study of how a small pilot program quickly gained popularity and became a paramount service in meeting the needs of at-risk students while building meaningful cross-institutional relationships. The presenter will demonstrate how to develop campus partnerships to implement long-term technology lending programs and meet the technology needs of at-risk students to promote their overall success in an equitable and scalable manner. Attendees will gain insight (including powerful impact data) on how to make the case for similar programs at their higher education institutions, and they will take away an understanding of how to operationalize such a service, leveraging lessons learned from pitfalls experienced in the pilot program.

Trailblazing Pathways Across the Digital Divide
Live Webinar: Tuesday, September 3, 2024, 1 - 2 p.m. CT

Presenter:

Andrew See, Head of User Services and Experience, Cline Library, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ

Registration Fees:

Core Member: $57.67
精东传媒Member: $71.10
Nonmember: $79.00

How Do I Purchase Group Registration?

You can register a group by specifying the number of people who will be accessing the webinar during checkout. Your library should be an inviting and beautiful safe haven. In this webinar, you will learn how effective security solutions work seamlessly with your vision to create welcoming and inclusive spaces. An experienced security consultant will share the four fundamental principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED): 1) natural surveillance (criminals do not like to be seen); 2) natural access control (clearly define public and private spaces); 3) territorial reinforcement (an environment that fosters privacy and a sense of ownership); and 4) maintenance (upkeep to discourage vandalism and other crimes). Librarians from Buffalo, NY, and Columbus, OH, will place these principles in context through two case studies with real-world security scenarios. Architects with a combined 30 years of library planning experience will then show specific examples where programmatic and aesthetic goals aligned with safety and security concerns.

Safety by Design
Live Webinar: Wednesday, August 28, 2024, 1 - 2 p.m. CT

Presenters:

Rick Amweg, Staff Consultant, Security Risk Management Consultants, New Albany, OH
Jeannine Purtell, Chief Operating Officer, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, Buffalo, NY
Wendy Tressler, Core Past-President (2023-2024) and Director of Capital Planning and Project Management, Columbus Metropolitan Library, Columbus, OH
Rick Ortmeyer, Partner, Bostwick Design Partnership, Cleveland, OH
Meagan Dutczak, Associate, Bostwick Design Partnership, Cleveland, OH

Registration Fees:

Core Member: $57.67
精东传媒Member: $71.10
Nonmember: $79.00

How Do I Purchase Group Registration?

You can register a group by specifying the number of people who will be accessing the webinar during checkout. Artificial Intelligence (AI) would not exist without digitization. Machine Learning requires massive amounts of training material with more data creating higher intelligence. Digital Humanities has reenergized historical research. Decades-long digitization programs continue to build a vast and forever growing digital corpus. Materials collected and digitized by libraries are the core of these new technologies and disciplines. Bryan Benilous will discuss how digitization of material collected by libraries feed AI and how AI is being used to improve digitization. He will explore challenges with the existing ecosystem (silos, paywalls, biases, copyright, etc.) and dig deeper into how Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is utilized and how it is being improved by AI. Various digital humanities resources, both open access and commercial, will be highlighted. Attendees will better understand their role in the Digital Humanities and learn about resources to participate. They will be inspired to consider how their content might contribute to the broader digital corpus in support of the Digital Humanities.

Past to the Future: Intersections of Digitization, AI, and the Digital Humanities
Live Webinar: Tuesday, July 23, 2024, 1 - 2 p.m. CT

Presenter:

Bryan Benilous, Chief Consultant, Paperboy Digital Consulting, Boynton Beach, FL

Registration Fees:

Core Member: $57.67
精东传媒Member: $71.10
Nonmember: $79.00

How Do I Purchase Group Registration?

You can register a group by specifying the number of people who will be accessing the webinar during checkout. The presenters will explore the technical and political processes of overhauling and streamlining their LibGuides and A-Z database list. Through case studies, they will describe how they built on existing relationships, created new workflows, and secured buy-in for a total overhaul of the ways Georgia Tech Library employees share their expertise with an online audience. In addition to developing a template, rubric, and style guide for content creators, they created a team to redefine database links, update descriptions, remove extraneous icons, ensure title consistency, and conduct thorough subject association reviews. They will provide insights into the strategic decisions and collaborative efforts that drove this transformation, including cognitive load principles, accessibility standards to optimize the user experience, and emphasizing the use of plain language. In an age of information deluge, this approach demonstrates that less is indeed more, and buy-in from all parts of the library organization is essential.

Transforming LibGuides: A Case Study
Live Webinar: Tuesday, September 17, 2024, 1 - 2 p.m. CT

Presenters:

Marlee Givens, Team Lead for Instruction and Scholarly Research, Georgia Tech Library, Atlanta, GA
Liz Holdsworth, Head of Academic Engagement, Georgia Tech Library, Atlanta, GA
Heather Jeffcoat, Web & Discovery Management Librarian, Georgia Tech Library, Atlanta, GA

Registration Fees:

Core Member: $57.67
精东传媒Member: $71.10
Nonmember: $79.00

How Do I Purchase Group Registration?

You can register a group by specifying the number of people who will be accessing the webinar during checkout.
