CHICAGO—Core is pleased to present the four-part webinar series “Build Your Personal Website with Quarto." Are you interested in sharing your work, such as scholarship, creative work, and other projects, and increasing your online visibility? Creating a personal website allows you to highlight yourself and your work, develop an online presence that connects people to you and your work, and share your thoughts in a blog or other pages. Having a personal website is a great way for consultants or speakers to market their services and develop a portfolio of past work; for researchers and scholars to share their publications, including archiving for green open access; for public intellectuals to write blog posts and direct readers to their other writings; and for creatives to highlight their work in various formats and media. This four-part webinar series will provide a basic foundation to get a personal website started and develop the skills to continue building and maintaining your site. The webinar will revolve around Quarto and GitHub Pages: Quarto makes publishing websites simple while providing a lot of customizability for users interested in going deeper, and GitHub Pages allows users to publish their websites for free.

948,000 and Counting: Free Webinar on Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Qualifying employees can receive federal student debt relief. Over 948,000 public servants have benefitted so far.

WASHINGTON — The ��ý (ALA) will present a free webinar for library workers about Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) on Oct. 2, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

The webinar will explain how to obtain student loan relief from the PSLF program, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Education. PSLF will forgive the federal student loan balances with qualifying employment history at a government or non-profit organization, such as many school, academic, public, and special libraries.

To date, nearly 1 million public servants — including qualifying library workers – have received more than $69 billion in loan forgiveness under PSLF.

“For years, ��ýhas advocated for library workers’ access to Public Service Loan Forgiveness,” said ��ýPresident Cindy Hohl. “We’re proud to host this webinar so more library workers can learn about this important opportunity for student debt relief.”

The webinar is presented by Public Service Promise, a new non-profit that works to educate public servants about the process for obtaining student loan forgiveness through PSLF. Betsy Mayotte, an expert on student loans and President of The Institute of Student Loan Advisors, will walk through the requirements of qualifying for the program and will answer general questions about how to navigate the application process.

Core Webinar Series: Library Facility Master Planning

CHICAGO—Core/Buildings & Operations: Buildings for College and University Libraries and Planning & Design Committees are pleased to present the four-part webinar series “Library Facility Master Planning." Library leaders with responsibility for one or more buildings continually grapple with aging systems and facilities, while also keeping physical spaces fresh and responsive to evolving service and programming needs. Without a comprehensive plan, a series of small improvements in individual rooms or partial floors can lead to an inconsistent patron and staff experience and inefficient resource use. Additionally, without a master plan, collection management policies intended to free up library space, can make library real estate targets for both desirable and less desirable non-library uses. Administrative support and campus funding requests are better received when presented within the context of a master plan that aligns with campus-wide strategic goals. This series explores the key aspects of a Library Facility Master Plan, from understanding its necessity and initiation to practical insights about conducting a master planning process, along with lessons learned. It features presenters including planners and architects, as well as a wide spectrum of academic library deans, whose experiences will provide useful insights.

Core Webinar: Trailblazing Pathways Across the Digital Divide

CHICAGO—Join Core for the webinar "Trailblazing Pathways Across the Digital Divide" on September 3, 2024, at 1 p.m. CT. In this webinar, participants will learn about a collaborative partnership between an academic library and offices within Student Affairs and campus IT to identify and fund long-term (full academic year) laptops to students most in need of this critical technology. The presenter will provide a case study of how a small pilot program quickly gained popularity and became a paramount service in meeting the needs of at-risk students while building meaningful cross-institutional relationships. The presenter will demonstrate how to develop campus partnerships to implement long-term technology lending programs and meet the technology needs of at-risk students to promote their overall success in an equitable and scalable manner. Attendees will gain insight (including powerful impact data) on how to make the case for similar programs at their higher education institutions, and they will take away an understanding of how to operationalize such a service, leveraging lessons learned from pitfalls experienced in the pilot program.

Watkins published a best-selling book on leadership transitions, The First 90 Days. Later updated in 2013, its guidance has become a touchstone for many stepping into a new role as manager. Watkins advises new managers to follow 10 directives: Prepare Yourself; Accelerate Your Learning; Match Strategy To Situation; Negotiate Success; Secure Early Wins; Achieve Alignment; Build Your Team; Create Alliances; Manager Yourself; and Accelerate Everyone. This panel session will critically examine each of these directives, drawing on the real-life experience of three panelists as they navigated their first three months in a new management or leadership role within a library organization. Attendees will come away with practical insights and tips on making a success of those first 90 (or more) days.

Core Webinar: Safety by Design

CHICAGO—Core hosts the webinar "Safety by Design" on August 28, 2024, at 1 p.m. CT. Your library should be an inviting and beautiful safe haven. In this webinar, you will learn how effective security solutions work seamlessly with your vision to create welcoming and inclusive spaces. An experienced security consultant will share the four fundamental principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED): 1) natural surveillance (criminals do not like to be seen); 2) natural access control (clearly define public and private spaces); 3) territorial reinforcement (an environment that fosters privacy and a sense of ownership); and 4) maintenance (upkeep to discourage vandalism and other crimes). Librarians from Buffalo, NY, and Columbus, OH, will place these principles in context through two case studies with real-world security scenarios. Architects with a combined 30 years of library planning experience will then show specific examples where programmatic and aesthetic goals aligned with safety and security concerns.

Multnomah County Library chosen as the site of the 2025 Children’s Literature Lecture Award featuring Kyle Lukoff

CHICAGO - The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) announced that the 2025 Children’s Literature Lecture committee has chosen Multnomah County Library System, Portland, Oregon, as the site of the 2025 Children’s Literature Lecture featuring Kyle Lukoff.

The Multnomah County Library’s application impressed the selection committee with its enthusiasm about Lukoff’s body of work and its dedication to supporting the LGBTQ+ community.

“We at Multnomah County Library are so excited to host Kyle Lukoff,” said Sara Ryan, Teen Services Librarian. “His smart, warm, funny writing resonates with a wide range of readers, and his experience as a bookseller, librarian and frequently-challenged author gives him a unique perspective on the field of children’s literature. We’re eager to welcome him, and for the community to hear his insights.”

An announcement of the date and time of the lecture will be posted soon.

ALSC originally established the lecture series in 1969 as the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Award with sponsorship from Scott, Foresman and Company. The lecture was named for May Hill Arbuthnot because of her significant contributions to the field of children’s literature. The award was renamed as the Children's Literature Lecture by the ALSC Board of Directors in January 2020. The purpose of the award remains the same: a lecture series that celebrates scholarship and critical thinking about literature for children, which are ever evolving. The new award name expands upon Arbuthnot’s professional legacy and celebrates the many voices and perspectives that all lecturers bring to this Award. In her own words, Arbuthnot was thrilled at the prospect of this award providing a forum for "new voices speak[ing] with new insight and new emphasis in the field of children's literature." Essentially, the Children's Literature Lecture Award centers on the distinction of its recipients, whose diverse voices and perspectives are necessary to broaden our understanding of and appreciation for children’s literature.

Members of the 2025 Children's Literature Lecture Award committee are: Chair Jenna Friebel, Oak Park Public Library, Illinois; Paris Kelvakis, Canton Public Library, Michigan; Ruth Tobar, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Janet Weber, Tigard Public Library, Oregon; and Lucinda Whitehurst, St. Christopher’s School, Richmond, Virginia.

CHICAGO—Join Core for the webinar "Past to the Future: Intersections of Digitization, AI, and the Digital Humanities" on July 23, 2024, at 1 p.m. CT. Artificial Intelligence (AI) would not exist without digitization. Machine Learning requires massive amounts of training material with more data creating higher intelligence. Digital Humanities has reenergized historical research. Decades-long digitization programs continue to build a vast and forever growing digital corpus. Materials collected and digitized by libraries are the core of these new technologies and disciplines. Bryan Benilous will discuss how digitization of material collected by libraries feed AI and how AI is being used to improve digitization. He will explore challenges with the existing ecosystem (silos, paywalls, biases, copyright, etc.) and dig deeper into how Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is utilized and how it is being improved by AI. Various digital humanities resources, both open access and commercial, will be highlighted. Attendees will better understand their role in the Digital Humanities and learn about resources to participate. They will be inspired to consider how their content might contribute to the broader digital corpus in support of the Digital Humanities.
