ACRL 2025 opening keynote speaker announced

CHICAGO – The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) is pleased to announce Ruha Benjamin as the opening keynote speaker for the ACRL 2025 Conference, “Democratizing Knowledge, Access, and Opportunities,” to be held April 2-5, 2025, in Minneapolis and online.

Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, Benjamin is the Founding Director of the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab and author of the award-winning book “Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code,” among many other publications. Her work investigates the social dimensions of science, medicine and technology with a focus on the relationship between innovation and inequity, health and justice, knowledge and power.

Benjamin earned a BA in Sociology and Anthropology from Spelman College, MA and PhD in Sociology from the University of California Berkeley and completed postdoctoral fellowships at UCLA’s Institute for Society & Genetics and Harvard University’s Science, Technology & Society Program. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including from the American Council of Learned Societies, National Science Foundation, Marguerite Casey Foundation 2020 Freedom Scholar Award and the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton. CHICAGO - The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) announces the opening of registration for the ACRL 2023 Conference, to be held March 15-18, 2023, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and virtually. Higher education has changed dramatically over the last few years. Academic libraries are addressing an increased emphasis on remote learning, rising calls for social justice, and an acknowledged need for flexibility that supports a sustainable work-life balance. ACRL 2023 will explore these issues and more around the theme of “Forging the Future.”

“Today’s higher education environment calls for continually innovative ways to advance student, faculty, and institution success,” said ACRL 2023 Conference Chair John Culshaw of the University of Iowa. “The content of the ACRL 2023 Conference was selected with this emphasis in mind, and we are excited to connect with our colleagues in Pittsburgh and virtually to help each other adapt and thrive in the current environment.”

CHICAGO - The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) announces its celebrated lineup of keynote speakers for the ACRL 2023 Conference, “Forging the Future,” to be held March 15- 18, 2023, in Pittsburgh. Be challenged and inspired by ACRL’s thought-provoking speakers as they share their work as journalists, podcasters, authors, and activists.

Opening Keynote, March 15, 2023 – Rebecca Nagle, Author and Podcaster

Rebecca Nagle is an award-winning advocate, writer, and citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Her writing about Native representation and tribal sovereignty has been featured in The Washington Post, The Guardian, USA Today, Teen Vogue, The Huffington Post, and more. In season one, as the host of the chart-topping podcast This Land, Nagle told the story of one Supreme Court case about tribal land in Oklahoma, the small-town murder that started it, and the surprising connection to her own family history. In This Land's second season, which debuted in August 2021, Nagle takes listeners through the 40-year history of the Indian Child Welfare Act.

In addition to her work towards Native American representation and the This Land podcast, Nagle lends her voice to fighting violence against women. She is the co-founder of FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture, which spoofed Victoria's Secret underwear to spread awareness of sexual assault, with underwear sporting messages like "NO MEANS NO." She also spearheaded The Monument Quilt, a collection of more than 3,000 stories by survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence and our allies, written, painted, and stitched onto red fabric. With her years of organizing and advocacy work, Nagle empowers her audiences to build community advocacy movements that are diverse and inclusive.

Nagle recently received The American Mosaic Journalism Prize, an unrestricted cash prize of $100,000 per recipient that is awarded to freelance journalists for excellence in long-form, narrative, or deep reporting about underrepresented and/or misrepresented groups in the American landscape.

Closing Keynote, March 18, 2023 – Heather McGhee, Public Policy Activist and Author

Heather McGhee designs and promotes solutions to inequality in America. Over her career in public policy, McGhee has crafted legislation, testified before Congress, and helped shape presidential campaign platforms. Her book "The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together" spent 10 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was longlisted for the National Book Award and Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. She has shared her opinions, writing, and research in numerous outlets, including the Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Politico, MSNBC, and National Public Radio.

For nearly two decades, McGhee helped build the non-partisan "think and do" tank Demos, serving four years as president. Under her leadership, Demos moved their original idea for “debt-free college” into the center of the 2016 presidential debate, argued before the Supreme Court to protect voting rights in January 2018, helped win pro-voter reforms in five states over two years, provided expert testimony to Congressional committees, including a Supreme Court confirmation hearing in 2017, and led the research campaigns behind successful wage increases for low-paid workers on federal contracts, as well as at McDonalds, Walmart and other chain retailers.

McGhee currently serves as a Visiting Lecturer in Urban Studies at the City University of New York’s School of Labor and Urban Studies and has held visiting positions at Yale University’s Brady-Johnson Grand Strategy Program and the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics.

Through its Core Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and dedication to open and equitable scholarship, ACRL strives to develop an inclusive conference program that will provide opportunities to underrepresented groups that have been historically marginalized or excluded due to race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, economic background, age, and/or disability. Academic librarians open up about openness and other challenging issues at ACRL 2021 Virtual Conference

CHICAGO – The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) 2021 Virtual Conference was held April 13-16, 2021. The virtual conference attracted 3,660 registrants and exhibitors who explored the complex issues impacting the future of library service.

Themed "Ascending into an Open Future," the virtual conference featured more than 300 programs showcasing the most current and relevant academic and research librarianship trends by boldly delving into such topics as open access, information literacy, collection development, collaboration, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and social justice. The inclusive conference reflected the library community's diverse range of race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, economic background, age, and ability.

Programs were made available both live and on-demand, with on-demand presenters available through asynchronous chat. Conference registrants have access to an on-demand archive of session recordings through May 13, 2021.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) was reflected in programming that included sessions exploring themes including the collaboration between the library and the LGBTQA Center at a large, private urban campus; community partnerships to educate about mis/disinformation; citizen web archiving; connection in a time of isolation; open-access art history; and engaging with community members whose histories and experiences have been historically excluded from library collections and services.

Panel discussions focusing on EDI topics included “Beating the Odds: Asian Women Leaders in Academic Research Libraries, in which five library leaders shared their experiences with younger librarians.

Conference speakers additionally offered various best practices that focused on how to humanize information to support first-generation college students. Many discussed how the role of academic librarians has changed due to COVID-19 and how waves of social injustice taking placed a new light on the need for diverse representation within the profession and information delivery.

The session “The Library Never Closes: Assessing Resources and Services after a Crisis” showed how COVID-19 disrupted academic libraries, with librarians from three universities sharing data on their users.

Keynote speakers included writer, sociologist, and MacArthur Fellow Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom and data journalist, writer, illustrator, and producer Mona Chalabi. Cottom said the conference theme mirrors conversations she has had with colleagues around the meaning of openness in an information-based society.

“Within the university, we rarely talk about the rights of our stakeholders to information, not just access,” Cottom said, raising the issue of data rights. “What would it look like for an academic community to develop a code of data rights?”

Invited presenters included Kaetrena Davis Kendrick, Dean of Ida Jane Dacus Library, and Louise Pettus Archives & Special Collections at Winthrop University (Rock Hill, S.C.), who discussed "Creating an Open Vision for 21st-Century Libraries and Archives."

Davis Kendrick suggested going beyond the concept of openness in library and archival spaces and entertaining the idea of welcome, outlining a model based on the Why, the Way, the Waylay, and the Wow. Libraries, she said, that provide users with a sense of purpose, belonging, place, and value will spark the Wow factor -- increased use of the collection, higher attendance, better facilities, increased faculty development, and collaboration.

Jennifer Brown, Jennifer Ferretti, and Charlotte Roh, administrators of We Here, an online community for Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in LIS professions and educational programs, presented the invited session "Systemic Oppression Requires Systemic Change: Recasting the Roles of Academic Libraries in Contemporary Contexts."

Brown pointed out inequities in professional development opportunities due to exorbitant travel and membership fees, saying, “When the cost of sharing knowledge is so prohibitive that entire communities are left out, it requires change.”

Academic librarians promoting a culture of diversity in higher education

CHICAGO – The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) 2021 Virtual Conference, taking place online from April 13-16, 2021, will showcase how academic and research libraries cultivate more open and inclusive organizations, collections, and services.

ACRL 2021 comes at a time when libraries are working to strengthen their commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The conference themed Ascending into An Open Future, provides a fantastic opportunity for library workers to explore higher education and library issues. Conference programs will focus on social and racial justice, qualitative data analysis, innovation, problem-solving, instructional collaborations, student success, copyright policies, mentoring, sustainability practices, remote learning, first-generation students, information ethics, and more.

Academic libraries and librarians play a critical role in creating spaces in which diverse and divergent viewpoints can be shared and exchanged and are essential to students' academic achievement. The conference will help library workers think in new and creative ways in instructing and supporting students as not only consumers of information but also as collaborative creators and producers of knowledge.

A 2015 ACRL report entitled "Academic Library Contributions to Student Success: Documented Practices from the Field," found:

Students who receive library instruction as part of their courses achieve higher grades and demonstrate better information literacy competencies than students who do not receive course-related library instruction.

Library instruction builds students' confidence in the research process.

Library instruction contributes to retention and persistence, particularly for students in first-year experience courses and programs.

ACRL 2021 Conference going virtual due to COVID-19

CHICAGO - The Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Board of Directors announced today that the face-to-face portion of the ACRL 2021 Conference scheduled for April 14-17, 2021, in Seattle, Washington, has been canceled because of the serious health risks posed by COVID-19 but will continue as a virtual-only event.

“ACRL’s highest priority is the health and safety of our community,” said ACRL President Jon E. Cawthorne of Wayne State University. “The Board feels that moving ACRL 2021 online is the best option to ensure that safety while continuing to provide the high-quality, interactive programming you’ve come to expect from our conference.”

The virtual ACRL 2021 Conference will be held over approximately the same dates in April 2021. More details about the virtual conference are forthcoming.

“While the Conference Committee is understandably disappointed that ACRL 2021 cannot happen in person, we are excited to channel our efforts into taking the conference virtual,” ACRL 2021 Conference Chair Beth McNeil noted. “We are grateful for your support and patience while we work through the details and look forward to welcoming everyone safely to the virtual event this spring.”

Proposal deadlines for ACRL 2021 remain unchanged. Contributed paper, panel session, preconference, and workshop proposal notifications are expected to go out by the end of December 2020. The deadline for Lightning Talk, Poster, Roundtable, TechConnect, and Webcast submissions has been extended to Monday, November 9. ACRL 2021 scholarship applications will also be automatically transferred to consideration for scholarships for the virtual conference.

“We are disappointed not to be together with our colleagues in Seattle,” added ACRL Interim Executive Director Kara J. Malenfant. “But at the same time, we are excited to funnel all of the enthusiasm, creativity, and terrific content to create a virtual event that is informative, engaging and memorable for the community.”

Through the efforts of talented library workers, today’s academic and research libraries are providing more open and inclusive collections and services.

ACRL 2021 offers a variety of options for participation and features nine session formats to suit a wide range of presentation and learning styles to share your research and creative endeavors with your colleagues. Contributed paper, panel session, preconference, and workshop proposals are due May 8, 2020. Lightning talk, digital poster session, roundtable discussion, TechConnect, and virtual conference webcast proposals are due October 9, 2020. Submit proposals via the online form available on the conference website. Conference tags will position proposals within the conference theme and will guide attendees to areas of interest during the conference.

Through its Core Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and dedication to open and equitable scholarship, ACRL strives to develop an inclusive conference program in Seattle that will reflect the library community’s diverse range of race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, economic background, age, and/or ability. We also seek presenters and topics from all types of libraries, positions, and experiences, including nonlibrary faculty, staff, and administrators. Individuals are encouraged to address how their proposed sessions, along with their personal and professional experiences, will advance these goals and promote equity and inclusion.

ACRL 2021 will feature more than 500 conference programs carefully selected and presented by leaders in the profession, a variety of formal and networking opportunities, exhibits from more than 200 companies, and more. Registration opens in May 2020.
