Call for ��ýAwards Jury Volunteers

��ýMembers are invited to submit interest in volunteering to serve on ��ýAwards Juries. Members who wish to be considered for Awards Juries should submit their interest via this online form by Monday, September 30, 2024. Final jury appointments are made by the ��ýAwards Committee Chair, who is appointed by the ��ýPresident-elect and approved by the ��ýExecutive Board.

Please note this call for volunteers is for ��ýGeneral Awards Juries (i.e. awards not administered by a Division, Round Table, or unit within ALA.) Please note that serving on a jury does not count against the recommended three ��ýappointments maximum. Neither jury members nor their institutions are eligible for nominations for the award jury on which they are currently serving.

The responsibility of a Jury Member is to:

Understand the criteria and selection process for the specific award
Promote award through a diverse range of communication channels for maximum exposure.
Promote and put forward nominations that are deemed deserving of recognition.
In the event that the applicant pool is insufficient, examine the jury's records from the past two years and collaborate with the staff liaison to extend the submission deadline. It is important to note that the Award Juries are not required to choose a winner in any given year if suitable candidates for the award are not present.
Oversee the distribution and evaluation of awards as required, coordinating timelines and ensuring that all deadlines are adhered to.
Determine the eligibility of nominations based on the guidelines set forth in the Awards Manual and the specific terms of the award.
Choose the recipient of the award.
If the jury chair is unable to serve, jury members may be asked to step up and serve.

Applications Now Open for the Core Online Course Scholarship for Library Professionals from Developing Countries

CHICAGO–Core is now accepting applications for the Online Course Scholarship for Library Professionals from Developing Countries to participate in our online Fundamentals courses held between September 11, 2024 and December 22, 2024. One free seat per session is available to librarians and information professionals from developing countries.

For full information about the scholarship, including eligibility criteria and a link to the application form, please visit our Online Course Scholarship page. The application deadline is August 18, 2024.

The Core International Relations Committee will review all applications according to eligibility criteria and the submission of requested information. Email acceptance will be sent to a successful applicant as soon as the decision is made but no later than one week prior to the course starting date. Eligible applicants need to completely fill out the application and submit both a personal statement and a supervisor’s reference letter in order to be considered for a scholarship. The application form contains instructions for the content of the statement and letter. Please note preference will be given to applicants who have not already been awarded this scholarship, and the Committee puts the most weight on applicants’ personal statements.

NMRT Announces Annual Conference Award Winners

The New Members Round Table (NMRT) of ��ýis pleased to announce the winners of its Annual Conference Awards. The NMRT Awards foster active involvement in ��ýthrough various special events at ��ýAnnual Conferences. The winners of this year’s awards are listed below.

The Professional Development Attendance Award

The Annual Conference Professional Development Attendance Award is presented to two NMRT members each year. The award provides professional development and networking opportunities to NMRT members by providing a ticket to attend the event of their choice at the ��ýAnnual Conference. This year’s winners include Theresa Bruce and Sandy Yang.

Theresa Bruce

Theresa Bruce is a champion of students’ voices, educational equity, and teacher wholeness. A native Baltimorean hailing from West Baltimore, she is a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (2005) as well as the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (2009). After earning a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago (2011), she knew there would be no better place to advocate for youth than her hometown of Baltimore. Her education career began with teaching 8th grade Social Studies in city schools. In this role ─which she held for over a decade, she demonstrated her passion about student voice & student choice through the infusion of cultural relevance and advocacy into her lessons. Currently, she is the inaugural Library Media Specialist within her school community.

Some of her more recent accomplishments include serving as a 2020 Baltimore City Public Schools Teacher of the Year Finalist, 2021 MD Secondary Social Studies Teacher of the Year and a 2022 UMBC Alumni of the Year. She also serves as a member of the Baltimore City Mayoral Trauma Informed Care Task Force to support government agencies in operating through a trauma informed lens.

Outside of her passion for education, she enjoys reading, journaling, crafting, and trying different restaurants around the city. These are all forms of self-care that she thoroughly enjoys. Additionally, she is an animal lover with six fur babies (4 cats, a pit bull, and a guinea pig) and an awesome husband who supports all of her out-of-the-box ideas!

Sandy Yang

Sandy Yang is a Library Specialist IV at RAND, a nonprofit research organization, where she helps preserve and provide access to the RAND archival collections. She's currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science degree at the University of Alabama, where her focus is on how libraries and archives can better serve diverse communities. Sandy is also passionate about equitable access and intellectual freedom in library and information science. In her free time, she loves illustrating, cycling, and cooking.

The Professional Development Grant

The Professional Development Grant awards $1,000 to one individual to offset the costs of attending the ��ýAnnual Conference. This year’s winner is Samantha Archibald Mora.

Samantha Archibald Mora transferred to the library after 20 years of teaching English, Spanish, and bilingual education in public schools. She has her master’s degree. Samantha Archibald Mora is a bilingual teacher-librarian at the Wood River Middle School in Hailey, Idaho. She's the winner of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Innovative Reading Grant for 2022. She has published articles in Booklist and Knowledge Quest. She holds a degree in English Education, is a Boise State Writing Project Fellow, and was a Peace Corps Volunteer (El Salvador, 1998-2001).

The Shirley Olofson Memorial Award

The Shirley Olofson Memorial Award is presented annually in honor of Shirley Olofson, a well-respected former NMRT President, who died during her term in office. This year’s Shirley Olofson Memorial Award winner is Rachel Games.

Rachel Games is the Library Media Specialist at Yukon High School in Yukon, Oklahoma. She got her Bachelor of Science in Language Arts Education from the University of Oklahoma and her Master of Science in Book History and Material Culture from the University of Edinburgh. After teaching high school English for eight (8) years, Rachel transitioned from the classroom to the library. When she isn’t busy reading, Rachel enjoys doing puzzles, exploring new places, and spending time with her boyfriend and their (many) pets.

Tom C. Clark High School Awarded ALA’s 2024 Jaffarian Award for Freedom Walk Program

CHICAGO — The ��ý (ALA) has awarded its 2024 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award to Tom C. Clark High School in San Antonio, Texas for its Freedom Walk program.

The $5,000 Jaffarian Award, supported by ALA’s Cultural Communities Fund, recognizes excellence in humanities programming in school libraries that serve grades K-12.

Selected from a competitive group of proposals, Tom C. Clark High School is the first high school to win the Jaffarian Award. This year, the Jaffarian Award included school libraries serving 9-12. Previously, only school libraries serving K-8 were eligible.

In the face of legislative threats and scrutiny against public school libraries and access to resources, Clark High School’s winning program centered on the freedom to read and engaged the community to understand the fundamental rights of students to access a diverse range of information and literature in their school library.

In 2023, Clark High School librarian, Lucy Podmore, redesigned the school’s traditional observance of Banned Books Week into a Freedom to Read Week, introducing the Freedom Walk, an all-encompassing event for students.

Collaborating with social studies teachers to align with curriculum, the Freedom Walk occurred during student lunch periods and comprised of five stations centered around various censorship issues: 1st Amendment rights, censorship terms, school district collection development and reconsideration policies, books as windows and mirrors, and voter registration/education. The interactive stations gave nearly 500 students the opportunity to reflect and learn about their own experiences with censorship through games and introspective prompts.

“The Freedom Walk stands as a vibrant example of how interactive and thoughtful programming can ignite engagement with critical societal issues among young people,” said Podmore. “The Freedom Walk is more than just an event; it's a catalyst for change, inspiring students to take an active role in their communities and in the broader democratic process.”

This year’s Jaffarian Award Committee was chaired by Anita Cellucci, library teacher, Westborough (Mass.) High School; Anne Link, K-5 media specialist, Bristol Elementary School, Webster Groves, Mo.; Carla Larsen, retired elementary school media specialist, South Washington County Schools Cottage Gove, Minn.; and Joe Zappitello, director, Harbor-Topky Public Library, Ashtabula, Ohio.

“The Award Committee was impressed by the emphasis on civil dialogue and the lasting student interest in the topics beyond the day of the event,” said Cellucci. “The level of collaboration with the community and the focus on censorship and advocacy made this a standout and relevant school program.”

The Jaffarian Award is administered by ALA’s Public Programs Office in cooperation with the American Association of School Librarians (AASL).

Syosset High School named National School Library of the Year

Syosset High School named National School Library of the Year

CHICAGO – Syosset High School, located in Syosset, New York, is the recipient of the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) 2024 National School Library of the Year (NSLY) Award. Sponsored by Follett Content Solutions, the NSLY Award annually honors a school library that exemplifies the implementation of AASL's National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries. Syosset High School will receive a crystal obelisk – the symbol of school library excellence – and $10,000 toward its school library.

“The school library at Syosset High School is a beehive of activity,” said award committee co-chair Mary Woodard. “They try to blur the boundaries between the library and classroom, encouraging classroom teachers to take risks and developing relationships that drive people to use the library. It has evolved into a warm, supportive, flexible, and innovative space where the librarians are always on the lookout for how they can add to and elevate the educational program across curriculum areas. The Syosset High School library offers a level of instructional expertise that is sought out by every educator.”

Co-chair Samual Northern notes, “The librarians are not just custodians of books but builders of capacity in teachers. They tirelessly seek ways to enrich the curriculum, from curating resources for classroom instruction to organizing guest authors or speakers to extend a lesson. Their efforts truly evoke and sustain cross-curricular connections and collaborations among content teachers, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.”

Dr. Thomas L. Rogers, Syosset Central School District Superintendent of Schools, wrote in his endorsement letter, “Syosset’s mission is ‘to prepare students to thrive in both the future we imagine and one which may evolve in ways yet to be envisioned.’ Syosset’s high school library animates this mission in extraordinary ways that students and faculty alike find tangible and meaningful.”

“The Syosset Library Learning Commons future-focused, innovative, and supportive approach, coupled with its dedication to inquiry, imagination, and lifelong learning, makes it a shining example of what a modern library should aspire to be and sets a standard for libraries nationwide,” wrote David Steinberg, Assistant Principal for Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology.

Aliyyah Hamid, a 12th-grade student at Syosset, said “The library’s energetic hum and the dedicated nature of its staff are refreshing against the competition of academic performance outside its walls. The Syosset High School Library Learning Commons is an ecology of care and opportunity, and I strongly endorse it for the National School Library of the Year Award.”

“The National School Library of Year award shines a spotlight on the significant difference a school library can make for every person in a school community,” said AASL President Courtney Pentland. “You can tell by the comments from the committee that Syosset High School's library is a wonderful example of what can occur in a truly supported school library with a certified school librarian at the helm - exemplary work with students across backgrounds, interests, and skill sets finding their personalized needs met in a welcoming space; classroom teachers seeking out expertise and assistance; and PLCs facilitated by school librarians to name just a few. AASL Announces Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) Collection Development Grants

CHICAGO — Ten collection development grants are available to AASL members to create or expand their collection with content to provide context and content that explores Jewish experience, Jewish achievement, and Jewish identity as an antidote to antisemitism. Sponsored by The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, the “Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) Collection Development Grants,” will offer ten AASL members $500 in grant funds to create or expand their collection.

Those interested in applying can access the application at www.ala.org/aasl/awards/JAHM. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2024. Late applications will not be considered.

“Creating a diverse and inclusive collection that focuses on exploration and celebration is so important,” said AASL President Courtney Pentland. “Thank you, Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, for your support of school libraries and this important new grant.”

In line with U.S. National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism released by the White House in May 2023, JAHM (first established in 2006) has engaged millions of Americans with the diverse stories of American Jewish life, serving as an antidote to antisemitism by highlighting the valuable role that Jews have played in our national story, and underscoring the importance of both classroom education and the work of public institutions—especially museums and libraries— which are among the most trusted and valued sources of information across demographic groups.

Hoboken (NJ) Public Library and Independence (KS) Public Library Awarded ALA’s Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant

CHICAGO — The ��ý (ALA) has awarded its fifth Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant to the Hoboken (NJ) Public Library and the Independence (KS) Public Library. The winning libraries will bolster their initiatives aimed at promoting food security and addressing homelessness within their communities.

The $2,000 annual grant assists school, public, academic, tribal and special libraries in initiating or enhancing community engagement endeavors. Each year, these grants facilitate community engagement projects centered around a particular theme. In 2024, libraries submitted proposals concentrated on "community empowerment.”

The Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant is made possible by former ��ýpresident and longtime generous supporter Nancy Kranich, supplemented by donors to ALA’s Cultural Communities Fund. The grant selection committee comprises a chair and four ��ýmembers appointed by ALA's Public and Cultural Programs Advisory Committee (PCPAC).

“Hoboken Public Library and Independence Public Library have exemplified outstanding programs that empower their communities,” stated Nancy Kranich. “My congratulations go to both libraries, chosen from a competitive group of impressive proposals that reflect my ongoing passion for libraries transforming communities. I’m proud to support such promising and innovative projects.”

Hoboken Public Library will use the grant to initiate a Homelessness Advisory Group, a monthly program that empowers unhoused patrons by collaborating with them to provide essential and responsive tools and resources. The program will feature a series of workshops covering mental wellness, first aid/CPR/Naloxone training, outdoor survival skills, tenant education, workplace readiness and financial literacy.

Independence Public Library will use the grant to continue its Eat, Play, Read initiative, which aims to combat food insecurity. This program empowers individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed decisions about their nutritional intake. With grant funding, the library will supplement the initiative by providing fresh produce grown in the library’s STEAM Garden, which will be upgraded with ADA-compliant planters and safe barriers.

“Hoboken’s efforts to center and work with unhoused patrons in the community, and Independence’s work with a range of community partners to manage their own food resources, are both standout initiatives,” said Elaine Tai, committee chair and supervising librarian at Berkeley (Calif.) Public Library. “These projects exemplify the ways libraries can work with and empower the people they serve.”

Three Libraries Awarded ALA’s 2024 Peggy Barber Tribute Grant for Exceptional Civic Education Programs

Three Libraries Awarded ALA’s 2024 Peggy Barber Tribute Grant for Exceptional Civic Education Programs

CHICAGO — The ��ý (ALA) has awarded its 2024 Peggy Barber Tribute Grant, a programming grant named after the transformative ��ýleader, to the Library System of Bradford County (New Albany, Penn.), Danbury (Conn.) Public Library and Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Libraries (Mount Pleasant, Mich.).

The $2,500 grant, open to public, academic, K-12, tribal and special libraries, supports meaningful programs in libraries with limited programming budgets. The Peggy Barber Tribute Grant supports a different type of library programming each year. Applicants for the 2024 grant proposed programming related to civic education.

The Library System of Bradford County’s proposed project, Why Your Vote Matters: History, How to, and More, will educate library patrons on the right to vote, how to find information on candidates and how running for local office can help the community become more engaged in shaping the future of the region. The library will partner with the Bradford County Regional Arts Council to present a film on voting rights followed by a panel discussion and meet and greet with local elected officials.

The Civic Hub Initiative at the Danbury Public Library will be a “pop-up” space within the library for rotating collections on civics topics and activities focused on local issues. Patrons will take part in programs including talks with local organizations to encourage community volunteering. The rotating topics as part of the Civic Hub will include voting, environmental sustainability, food insecurity, housing instability, immigration and income inequality.

Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Libraries will host the program, Kna-dwen-mi-go (You Are Needed), to provide an opportunity and space for tribal community members to engage with Native people who currently hold non-Tribal-elected office. With Native Americans underrepresented in non-Tribal elected offices, the program will encourage attendees to consider running for office themselves. Current Native elected officials will be available to answer any questions and work as guides to help those interested. Hosted in-person and virtually, the library aims for this program to reach a large audience and for it to be an opportunity for collaboration with community partners.

“The committee of the 2024 Peggy Barber Award was greatly impressed by the many mindful and creative proposals we received this year,” said Alicia Deal, committee chair and librarian at Dallas (Texas) Public Library. “The three winning libraries represent the innovative ways library programming can work to engage communities in civics on local and national levels. The selection committee sends our congratulations to the winners, and we look forward to the outcomes of the proposed projects.”

Margaret "Peggy" Barber was a transformative leader in ��ýand the library field who was behind the creation of National Library Week and the Celebrity READ series. The Peggy Barber Tribute Grant was created with donations from Barber’s friends and colleagues. To support the grant, make a contribution to the Peggy Barber tribute fund within ALA’s Cultural Communities Fund.

Gabriela Gualano receives AASL Frances Henne Award

CHICAGO – Gabriela Gualano, teacher librarian at Paul Revere Middle School in Los Angeles, California, is the recipient of the 2024 American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Frances Henne Award. Sponsored by Bloomsbury Libraries Unlimited, the $1,250 award recognizes a school librarian with five years or less experience who demonstrates leadership qualities with students, teachers, and administrators. The award will enable Gualano to attend an AASL National Conference for the first time.

“The committee and I were impressed with the difference Gabriela has made to her school and its library in just a few short years by turning it into a ‘hub of intellectual curiosity,’ as one of her colleagues described it to us,” said Elizabeth Kahn, award committee chair. “The fact that she takes advantage of opportunities for professional growth and takes on leadership roles in her district is evidence to us that she is committed to building ways to give back to our profession. We will be looking for Gabriela at the next AASL National Conference!”

Gualano’s colleague, Patricia Barbieri, an English teacher at Paul Revere Middle School, shared that, “Gabriela's passion for her work, combined with her eagerness to learn and innovate, makes her an ideal candidate for participation in AASL. I have no doubt that the knowledge and skills she acquires at the conference will have a positive impact on our school community. Her attendance will not only benefit her professional growth but will also contribute to the continued improvement of our library services and, consequently, the overall educational experience of our students.”

“To see someone new to the profession already leading at the state level reinforces that the future of school librarianship is in good hands,” said AASL President, Courtney Pentland. “Gabriela chairing the Library Professionals Committee in her union and serving as vice-president of communications for the Los Angeles School Librarians Association enabled her to become a critical connecting point for so many organizations that can advance the role of school librarians in her state. I applaud her commitment to growth by seeking out opportunities at the national level.”

The AASL award winners will be recognized during the 2025 AASL National Conference taking place October 16-19 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Showcase Your Library’s Interior Design Work by Applying for the 2024 ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Awards

CHICAGO—Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) are currently accepting applications for the 11th annual IIDA/��ýLibrary Interior Design Awards honoring excellence in library interior design and promoting extraordinary interior spaces across nine categories. Winners and their clients will be honored and showcased during an awards ceremony at the ��ýAnnual Conference in San Diego. The submission deadline has been extended through April 9.

Open to any interior designer, interior architect, or architect, the IIDA/��ýLibrary Interior Design Awards highlight library interior design projects in the following categories:

Public Libraries 30,000 sq. ft. & smaller
Public Libraries Over 30,000 sq. ft.
Academic Libraries 30,000 sq. ft. & smaller
Academic Libraries Over 30,000 sq. ft.
Special Libraries 30,000 sq. ft. & smaller
Special Libraries Over 30,000 sq. ft.
Outstanding Historical Renovation Project
Single Space: a small project that focuses on a specific room or area in a library
On the Boards: a project currently in the design phase and not under construction

Projects must be completed during or after October 2020. Previously published projects will also be accepted. Additionally, library projects in the design phase are welcomed and can be submitted to the “On the Boards” category.
